Overview
SmartCollab is a project and task management platform for teams. Admins and project managers create projects, add members and assign tasks; team members update the status of the tasks assigned to them; and a dashboard, activity log and notifications keep everyone aware of progress.
- Problem
- Teams that coordinate work through chat and spreadsheets lose track of who owns which task, what is overdue and what changed. A shared task board also needs rules, such as no duplicate tasks, no past deadlines and no reassigning finished work, and permissions so people only change what they should.
- Solution
- SmartCollab gives each project a Kanban-style board of Todo, In Progress and Completed tasks. Three roles (Admin, Project Manager, Team Member) control who can create, edit, assign and delete, the API validates the task rules, and a dashboard shows KPIs, charts, member workload and recent activity. The whole stack (Next.js client, Express API and MongoDB data model) is custom-built rather than layered on a third-party project-management service.
Key features
- Three roles (Admin, Project Manager, Team Member) enforced by API middleware; a Team Member can only change the status of tasks assigned to them
- Projects with a deadline and an Active, Completed or On Hold status; members are added to each project
- Kanban-style task board (Todo, In Progress, Completed) with quick-move buttons, priorities, due dates and an assignee chosen from the project's members
- Task rules enforced by the API: no duplicate task titles within a project, no past due dates, and no reassigning a completed task
- Search, filters (project, priority, assignee, deadline) and sorting (latest, nearest deadline, highest priority, recently updated), with server-side pagination
- Comments and file attachments (up to 10 MB) on tasks
- Bulk status change and bulk delete for Admins and Project Managers
- Dashboard with KPI cards (projects, tasks, completed, pending, overdue), charts by priority and status, project progress and per-member workload
- Activity log of project, task and member events, shown as in-app notifications with read and unread state

My role & contribution
Role: Full-stack developer
- Designed and built the whole product: the Next.js client, the Express API and the MongoDB data model
- Implemented role-based access, the task validation rules, filtering, sorting and pagination in the API, and the matching permission checks in the interface
- Built the Kanban board, the dashboard analytics, the team workload view, the activity log and the notifications
- Deployed the client and the API to Vercel
